The Gwinnett County Police Department is an agency with a long history of excellence, integrity, and fairness. The department enjoys a strong relationship with the diverse community it serves and continues to build that reputation by constantly engaging and interacting with the residents. Because of our reputation, high standards, and commitment to excellence, we only recruit and hire the best and most qualified applicants.
The Gwinnett County Police Department is the second largest police agency in Georgia with an authorized strength of 930 sworn Officers and 129 Communications Officers, supported by 296 civilian employees. The department is CALEA accredited, originally attaining that designation in 1993. Gwinnett is located in the northeast part of metro Atlanta, serving a population of more than 800,000 residents with an area of 437 square miles.
The Police Headquarters is located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, with six precincts spread across the county. Because of the rapid growth of the county, plans are currently being prepared for the construction of a new headquarters building beginning in 2025. The Department also has a $22 million, state of the art training facility that consists of a driving track, 25 and 100-yard indoor firing range, a shoot-house, and an academic building with 6 classrooms, library, weight room, defensive tactics room, and shooting and driving simulators. The 911 call center is located next to headquarters and is staffed with 124 communications officers.
Lateral Transfers – Applicants currently or formerly employed by a full-service law enforcement agency in any state will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis for lateral entry. Applicants will not be considered for lateral entry if they have taken a break from service longer than two years. Military police service does not meet the qualification of full-service law enforcement agency.
Approved lateral transfers are hired at the rank of Police Officer Senior. The starting salary range is $50,828 to $59,461 (plus a 3% or 6% education incentive for those with a 2-year or 4-year college degree, respectively).
As of January 1, 2022, P.O.S.T. has made it easier for certified out-of-state officers and Military Peace Officers to transfer certification to Georgia. View the Equivalency of Training Information document for more details.
In-State Lateral Transfer – In-state lateral transfers may qualify for an abbreviated training program.
Out-of-State Lateral Transfer – Out-of-state lateral transfers may have to attend the full academy session and obtain training required by the Gwinnett County Police Department to be certified as a police officer in Georgia. The police department can assist with obtaining your Georgia Equivalency of Training.
