The Dallas Police Department was founded in 1881, and it is the 2nd largest police department in the State of Texas and the 9th largest police department in the country.

This is the first step in a rewarding career with a progressive and diverse police department.
The Dallas Police Department has a new Lateral Transfer program with an abbreviated academy now available.
Minimum requirements for Lateral Entry Police Officer Applicants:
- Subject to the same hiring requirements as other applicants
- Must not turn 45 years old before the civil service exam
- Must have worked full time for a law enforcement agency as a sworn police officer in the United States or U.S. Territories
- Must have 36 months certified, full-time law enforcement experience with any law enforcement agency servicing 100,000+ population
- Must not be separated as a police officer for more than 4 months prior to applying
- Must not have pending disciplinary actions or investigations for misconduct or criminal activity
- With time served as a reserve officer or other type of unpaid peace officer, will not have that time calculated in the total time of active service
- If from out of state, will complete the full Dallas Police Training Academy or complete the TCOLE licensing process through the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement prior to entry into the Lateral Academy
- The Lateral Academy is only 12 weeks as opposed to 36 weeks
